Dirty Keto: What Is It and Is It Good for You?

Keto is a widely popular diet for a good reason – it is effective because it makes biological sense. During the process of ketosis, fat reserves are broken down into energy instead of carbs. So, little-to-no carbs is the name of the game when it comes to any shape and form of keto.

Dirty keto is a popular version of the keto diet. Its selling point is low-carb fast food and sugar-free snacks.

What is Dirty Keto?

In short, a dirty keto diet simply doesn’t consider the actual quality of food that a person eats – as long as it is low in carbs and sugar and loaded with fat. The fact that it is also known as “lazy keto” indicates that this diet isn’t generally preferred by nutrition experts.

So, why go with dirty keto instead of regular keto? Simply because the regular keto takes a lot of getting used to and the meal preparation can turn quite tedious. With lazy or dirty keto, you rely on fast foods and easy-to-prepare meals, which aren’t known for their health and nutritional benefits.

Is It Good for You?

Well, this question may sound like an easy one to answer, but it actually isn’t. Yes, if we’re talking about the direct benefits of eating any type of fast food that doesn’t contain carbs and sugar, then there isn’t much to talk about.

Carbohydrates provide the human body with glucose, which is further converted into energy. Stored fats can do the same, but not nearly as efficient. This is why every keto diet is based on eating low-carb and high-fat foods to compensate for it.

Fatty foods, contrary to popular belief, aren’t necessarily bad for you. But that only applies to healthy fats and oils. Dirty keto, though, doesn’t pay attention to what you eat, as long as there are no carbs involved. Does this make dirty keto bad for you? Actually, no it doesn’t, it’s just that people tend to use it in a wrong way.

Dirty keto is actually great for easing your way into a typical keto diet. Right off the bat, people tend to scoff when they hear about all the foods that they can no longer enjoy if they want to go keto. What they don’t know is that once the human body gets used to eating healthy, it will curb the appetite for all the unhealthy, low-nutrient junk food. This takes time, quite a lot of it, and jumping straight into a regular keto diet can be very overwhelming for some.

This is where dirty keto kicks in.

Regular Keto is Hard

Meal preparation, adjusting to foods and amounts that you dislike, lack of motivation, these are all factors that can easily deter you from adopting the keto diet over the long haul. Dirty keto, however, is very easy to adjust to and, perhaps more importantly, will oversaturate your cravings for unhealthy high-carb foods – you may not believe it, but after a month of eating junk food, you’ll be happy to switch to low-carb, high-fat foods that are actually healthy and good for you, which is the essence of keto.

Dirty Keto is a Gateway

So, dirty keto is essentially a helping hand that will provide you with an intro to a regular keto diet. It is called ‘lazy’ for a reason, but it will likely help you adjust your carb cravings while inciting your body to crave what regular keto dictates, instead of having to spend months adjusting. Use dirty keto but don’t overdo it as it may cause serious health complications.
